I’m a Lumberjack and I’m OK

Add comments

Ok… so maybe not a lumberjack, but the Monty Python song got stuck in my head as I was brainstorming some ideas for this post on planetary interaction for Crazy Kinux. Here’s a snippet of the prompt.

—————————————————————

But I’d like to pick your brains and what some of you can imagine.

Tyrannis will see some new industrial and planetary interaction opportunities like we’ve never seen before in New Eden. It’s a step in linking EVE Online and DUST514 as well. So I need you to write what you believe are the short and/or long term consequences of this development, in terms of the new industrial capacity it presents to players, in terms of the opportunities for pirates, for industrialists, for sovereignty, etc. Surprise us!

Out of all the articles, I’ll pick the 5 best, all of which will win a PLEX, courtesy of CCP Games! Out of those 5, one will be randomly picked to interview a CCP Dev who’s been working on Tyrannis!

The Rules
Write a blog post on Tyrannis’ and its Industrial consequences to EVE, wherever you see them. Submit your article in the comments below between April 3rd 2010 and April 10 2010 (midnight EDT). The winners will be announced by April 17th 2010. The 5 winners will each receive a PLEX and one will be randomly chosen to interview a CCP Dev during an up coming unannounced (as of yet) podcast.

God luck to all and fly safe!

Now, I’m not an industrialist. I do the occasional mining and building, but not to any degree to consider myself an industrialist. But what excites me about Tyrannis and planetary interaction (PI) is that planets inside wormholes will be interactive/harvest-able/what-have-you. I look forward to being able to try my hand at this and to see how it can change the wormhole experience. Below, I will go into a bit of detail on how I think PI is going to affect me as a wormholeer.

Pro’s

  1. Fuel
  2. More to do
  3. More Income on both a personal and corporate level

1. Fuel

From what I’ve gathered in the blogosphere, PI will produce a number of items that are currently used as POS fuel. Being inside a wormhole where fuel runs can be difficult, this will help significantly. It will lower the cost of fuel runs, as well as lower the space fuel takes up. What might take two trips in a hauler, could be reduced to one. Or we could use smaller, more nimble vessels for our fuel runs, therefore decreasing the time it takes to do them, and increase our odds of survival.

2. More to Do

Let’s face it, in wormholes, you can run out of things to do very quickly. Sites may dry up. Your static may be ‘bad.’ Not enough corp members to run a certain site, etc. PI will give us a number of planets to explore and manage. So when there is nothing else to do, we can increase our planetary production, judge efficiencies, calculate profitability, and collect goods. So, now there won’t be as much downtime, which is always good.

3. More income on both a personal and corporate level

Obviously, PI will bring another resource that we can take advantage of and profit from. I don’t think a lot of detail needs to go here. More to sell = more ISK. Pretty simple.

Cons

Not everything about PI is good from a wormholeer’s perspective. There are a number of things that we will face that could hinder our ability to take full advantage of PI.

1. Logistics

Goods take up space. When you have a huge number of goods needing transported to K-space, it makes things more difficult and risky.

2. Limits

In wormholes, there is a limit to the number of planets I can interact with. Once I exhaust the space/resources available to me, it becomes difficult to increase production. I can’t set up new stations in neighboring wormholes, because the chance of getting another entrance to that wormhole is extremely tiny. I could set up extractors in K-space, but the logistics make it very difficult.  I’d have to hope for a close exit to my extractors or travel a huge distance to collect my goods. And I wouldn’t be able to constantly manage and collect the goods. So, I’m limited to the planets within our home W-space.

If you have any thoughts or posts on the subject of PI in wormholes, I’d like to hear from you, so post a comment below.

It will be awsome as i have quite a few planets in my W-space… The problem might be that more people will decide to move into W-space as it has spare systems for planet mining.

I honestly don't think PI will bring more people into wormholes. W-Space is already crowded so I think only the current residents will take advantage of it. I think PI-specific corps will get burnt out looking for an unoccupied w-space.

Thanks for your participation. The results of the contest will be announced tomorrow morning! Good luck.

I look forward to seeing the results. Need to look through the other entries myself when I get a chance.
